Spring is in the air! Flowers are blooming, the rain is unpredictable and I can finally get some sun on my bare white legs.
With each season, I get asked the question, “What do I wear to my session?”. To help you out, here are a few tips to help you choose what to wear to your session.
DOs:
Layer – Having layers really gives the picture a lot of interest and depth. It also gives you more variety when you are able to take a jacket off, or put on an extra cardigan.
Accessorize – Big bold statement necklaces can really add a “pop” to the images. Guys can add belts and watches to really round out the outfit.
Be comfortable – If you’re uncomfortable in what you are wearing, it will show in your pictures. You want to be able to easily do natural poses and not have to worry about clothes being too tight or too loose.
Have fun with it – If you’re a senior, we want to show off your personality and really use your style as a driving force in your session. Accessories and props are encouraged! For families, get the kids involved in picking their outfit, have a themed shoot, or just be comfy and be able to have fun at your session. Let the real YOU shine through your wardrobe, not cover it up!
DON’Ts:
Match – Gone are the days where everyone wears all white or all black tops with jeans. While that may have been a popular tradition in the 90’s, we want to avoid making pictures look dated and fake. You don’t walk down the street wearing the same shirts and bottoms, so why start now? We want the pictures to look natural. Focus more on coordinating outfits than matching them. Try to stick with a color palette of 3-4 colors and work them into everyone’s wardrobe.
Be too trendy – While the pictures should be true to who you are, you also want to be careful to not wear too many trends or fads. I know that right now chevron and aztec prints are all the rage, but will they be in 5 years? Or even 3? Classic prints and patterns that never really seem to go out of style will have you loving your photos for a lifetime and not just until your next shoot!
Stress – Wear something you feel confident and beautiful in. Just stay true to yourself and wear what feels good. When you feel good, you look good!
